Seeing the "Big Five" in their natural habitat is the ultimate safari goal. Originally a hunting term for the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot, it now represents the most coveted wildlife sightings: Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, and Rhino.
Tanzania is arguably the best place in Africa to tick all five off your list. Here is our guide on where to find them.
1. The Lion (Simba)
Where to find them: The Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly the lion capital of Africa, hosting over 3,000 lions. The Ngorongoro Crater also has a very high density of lions, making them easy to spot on the crater floor.
2. The Leopard (Chui)
Where to find them: Leopards are elusive, solitary, and nocturnal, making them the hardest to spot. Seronera Valley in Central Serengeti is famous for leopard sightings in sausage trees. Tarangire National Park also offers good opportunities.
3. The Elephant (Tembo)
Where to find them: Tarangire National Park is famous for its massive herds of elephants, often seen digging for water in the riverbeds during the dry season. You will also see plenty in Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
4. The Buffalo (Nyati)
Where to find them: Cape Buffaloes are widespread. Huge herds can be found in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and even in smaller parks like Arusha National Park and Lake Manyara.
5. The Rhino (Kifaru)
Where to find them: The Black Rhino is critically endangered and rare. Your best chance of seeing one is in the Ngorongoro Crater, where rangers monitor them closely. Mkomazi National Park is also a dedicated rhino sanctuary.
Best Strategy to See All Five
To maximize your chances, we recommend a combined itinerary that includes:
- Serengeti: For Lions, Leopards, and Buffaloes.
- Ngorongoro Crater: For the rare Black Rhino (and the other four).
- Tarangire: For large Elephant herds.
